Samuel was the last judge and established the Israelite Monarchy. He was faithful to God and worked hard to get the people of Israel to remain faithful as well. As he aged the Israelites became worried about his successor as his sons were not faithful men. They asked him to appoint a king. He warned them of the corruption that came with kings and to trust God more. Still they requested a King. Samuel with the guidance of God anointed King Saul. Saul started his reign out well but soon fell into the temptation that came with power. King Saul sinned and ignored the words of God and so God sent Samuel to quietly anoint David as King. Samuel passed before he could see David take the throne and there was great mourning of the loss of such a good Judge, Prophet and Priest. Samuel’s feast day is August 20th
Why Samuel: The greens in the rosary reminded us of how Samuel grew up with the Lord. He was in the temple after he was weaned and there God calls to him and he answers “here I am Lord”. The blues remind us of Samuel watering the souls of the Israelites, tending to them and doing his best to keep them fixed on God. God calls us all to grow in the spirit as Samuel did and to nurture the seeds that have been planted there.
