Hannah was married to Elkanah, and shortly after being married learned that she was unable to have children. Every night she prayed to God asking Him to grant her the gift of a child. During the yearly visit to the Temple to offer sacrifice, Hannah fell onto the ground weeping asking God to grant her a son, and if He did she would dedicate that son to God. One of the priests nearby, concerned by her behavior, asked her to explain herself. She began weeping and poured out her grief. The priest blessed her and she returned home. Soon after that encounter she bore a son and named him Samuel which means “ God Heard”. Hannah did as she promised and brought Samuel to the temple and he was brought up serving God. Samuel became a High Priest and would crown both King Saul and King David. Hannah and Elkanah went on to have 6 children total. Hannah is the patron saint of couples without children and couples struggling with infertility (primary or secondary). Her Feast day is December 9th.

Why Hannah: The colors in the Hannah rosary made us think of the different natures of Saint Hannah. The pinks reminded us of her gentle nature and devotion to God and her husband. The bolder brick red leads to Hannah’s unwavering faith in God and lack of fear to ask God for her greatest desires. The burden of not conceiving is heavy and she brings that to God and cries out asking him to lift it off of her. God in His infinite mercy hears her cries and grants her desires. How we can learn from Hannah is to take our burdens to the Lord and ask him to help us carry the load.
