Elizabeth Ann Bayle Seton was the first native American to be canonized. She was born in New York City on August 28, 1774 to a prominent Episcopal family. She lost her mother at the age of three. In 1794 she married a wealthy businessman, William Magee Seton and they had five children. William’s businesses were failing along with his health so they took to Italy to help him recover. Unfortunately,  William passed away from Tuberculosis. It was there in Italy that Elizabeth discovered Catholicism. She was formed by her friends in Italy and took comfort in the Blessed Virgin as her mother. She returned to the United States and entered the Church in 1805.

After a number of difficult years she moved to Maryland and founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph. The first community for religious women established in the United States. She also established St. Joseph’s Academy and free school, planting the seeds of Catholic education in the United States. Her legacy now includes religious congregations in the United States and Canada, whose members work on the unmet needs of people living in poverty in the North American and beyond. She was canonized on September 14th, 1975 by St. Pope Paul VI.
