We are familiar with the woman at the well who Jesus meets while in Samaria. According to tradition, at the time of her baptism she took the name Photini which means Enlightened One. She along with her five sisters, Anatole, Photo, Photis, Paraskeve, Kyriake, and her two sons, Photeinos and Joseph began a missionary career. While in Africa Photini had a dream where Christ told her to go to Rome and help the Christians who were being persecuted by Emperor Nero. When she arrived many wanted to meet the woman who arrived with a large following and was boldly preaching the teachings of Christ. Soon Nero called for her arrest and of her siblings and sons. Photini heard about this and instead of being arrested she and her family went to Nero. There she talked with him and tried to convert him to the one true faith. The emperor then demanded to know whether they had all agreed to die for the Nazarene. Photini spoke for them. “Yes, for the love of Him we rejoice and in His name we’ll gladly die.” Hearing their defiant words, Nero ordered their hands beaten with iron rods for three hours. At the end of each hour another persecutor took up the beating. The saints, however, felt no pain. Nothing happened to their hands. Photini joyfully quoted words of a psalm by David: “God is my help. No matter what anyone does to me, I shall not be afraid.” Perplexed by the Christian’s endurance and confidence, Nero ordered the men thrown into jail. Photini and her five sisters were brought to the golden reception hall where he hoped to tempt the women with gold, gems, and all the wealth of the palace. Nero also asked his daughter and her slaves to speak with them and talk the sisters into denying God. Oh how his plan backfired. Instead Photini catechized them and they converted! Nero was enraged and condemned them all to death by fire. For seven days the companions burned in the fire but each time when they opened the doors they saw them alive and unburned. He also tried to destroy them with poison, but again they did not die. For years they stayed in the prisons turning them into a “house of God for many Romans that came were converted. Finally Nero had everyone but Photini beheaded, he instead threw her into a deep well and then back into prison. Photini was heartbroken that she remained the sole survivor and did not receive the crown of martyrdom. She prayed to be released from this life and then Jesus appeared and did the sign of the cross over her three times bringing her great joy and peace. Many days later, while she hymned and blessed God, Saint Photini gave her soul into God’s hands.

Why Saint Photini: Saint Photini is a saint we think everyone should know beyond what happens at the well. At the well she teaches us how to be seen by Christ even when we want to hide from everyone including him. Christ gave her the “Life Giving Water” and she took that and shared it with everyone she met. We too should let Christ see us, let him heal us, and we should go forth and share the Good News.

Absolutely Beautiful!

The Photini Novena Bracelet is beautiful -- even more stunning than the picture on the website. I bought it for my daughter as a Christmas gift, but I might have to purchase one for myself, too!
