About the Namesake:
St. Francis was born to a wealthy merchant family in Assisi, Italy, and grew up wanting for nothing. As a young man he dreamed of glory, becoming a knight when Assisi went to war, only to be captured and imprisoned for a year before being ransomed back to his family. Even that didn't end his desire for triumph, and he set out to join the Fourth Crusade.

On the way, Francis had a dream that told him to turn back home. That moment changed the course of his life. He gave up his family's wealth entirely, embraced a life of poverty, and devoted himself to rebuilding the Church, one crumbling chapel at a time, before founding what would become the Franciscan order.

Francis is remembered today for his deep love of creation, famously preaching to birds and taming a wolf, and for choosing simplicity over everything he was born into. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
