About the Seven Sorrows Devotion
The devotion to the Queen of Martyrs also known as Our Lady of Sorrows was first taken as a devotion by the Servants of Mary as their principal devotion of their order in 1239. From this, the devotion was propagated through most of Europe and was well known by the late 16th Century.
The Rosary of the seven sorrows, Also known as a chaplet, is a series of prayers that focus on the seven sorrows of Mary. Each section of the rosary leads us in meditation through each of Our Lady’s Sorrows.
The Seven Sorrows of Mary are considered the seven swords of her martyrdom, Each event piercing her heart as her suffering was united in love with her son. Her Seven Sorrows are:
- The Prophecy of Simeon
- The Flight into Egypt
- The Loss of the Child Jesus
- The Condemnation of Jesus
- The Crucifixion of Jesus
- The Retrieval of Jesus' Body
- The Burial of Jesus
