How often do I “lose” Jesus because of sin? How often do I take the easy or sinful path? More often then I would like to admit and it brings me sorrow. Andso I join Mary in her sorrow and ask her to guide me to alwaysseek out God and do God’s Holy Will first and foremost, the way Jesus did when He left His family for those three days.
The angel of God didn’t come to Mary in a dream and say wake Joseph and flee to Egypt because the paranoid ruler is coming after your baby. He visited Joseph. He told Joseph and then Joseph told Mary. And from what we know about Mary she trusted Joseph completely and followed him that night and fled to Egypt.
As we journey with Mary through the seven sorrows that pierce her heart each of us can relate to having our own hearts pierced. As we get closer to the passion of our Lord we can see the way to suffer with joy as only Mary can show us.
How does fasting fit in with the joyous time of Advent? Advent is preparing us not just for the birth of Christ, but it is also preparing us for the beginning of our salvation story. We fast to empty ourselves of the guilty pleasures, of habitual sin, and of excess attachments to have room for the Word made Flesh. Every hunger pain we feel can turn our heart and mind to the Lord. Soon we will be praying unceasingly as called and what healing we would have!
Empty yourself from the noise so you can be filled with God’s voice! It will be difficult at first but ask for help from Him and He will aid you! And quieting your exterior will only help you when the time comes to quiet your interior.
