St. Joseph of Cupertino was born in 1603 at Cupertino in the kingdom of Naples. In his youth he was known to be a troubled child, Slow to learn, absent minded and a quick temper. Because of his mannerisms, after being with the Capuchins for only a short while, he was dismissed at the age of 18 and sent home. Slowly he grew in humility and gentleness which led to his entrance into the Franciscan order, then to the priesthood. As a priest many miracles were worked through him. It became common to see him levitate while offering mass and go into ecstasy when conversing with God. He was so deeply in love with God that these moments drew him into deeper union. Eventually St. Joseph became so famous for his miracles that he had to be hidden away from the public in his later life.

St. Joseph of Cupertino  is celebrated on his feast day September 18 and is well known as the patron saint of aviators, flying and studying.
